Israel accedes to the Madrid Protocol for Trademark Registration
Israel will implement the Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, effective as of
September 1, 2010.
In a nutshell, the implications of implementing the Madrid Protocol in Israel are
as follows:
- Multi-class registrations possible;
- International Madrid Protocol Registrations (IR's) may be extended to Israel (national registrations may be transformed to International Registrations, and vice versa);
- Applications for International Registrations may be filed with the Israeli Trademark Office;
- Trademarks will be registered and renewed for periods of ten years. Registrations due to expire between September 1, 2010 through November 30, 2010 can be renewed as of August 31, 2010 for an extended period of fourteen years.
Since the Israeli Trademark Office examines trademark applications thoroughly, Madrid trademark applications which designating Israel will also be examined thoroughly.
